ABOUT
You’re in the enchanting Asterousia Mountains and want to explore the peaks of Agios Nikolaos? Why not go horseback riding?
The journey begins at the stables in the traditional ecotourism village of Thalori. From there, you head east, passing through the village of Kato Kapetaniana, before turning north towards the Ochria area.
The first stop is under ancient plane trees, just outside the 14th-century chapel of Agios Panteleimonas. After approximately 30 minutes, you’ll continue towards Poles, encountering ruins of ancient settlements along the way. At the halfway mark—17 kilometres in—you’ll arrive at the abandoned settlement of Agios Nikolaos, perched on a stunning mountainside. Here, you’ll enjoy a meal under the shade of age-old plane trees, beside a small creek.
After a 2-hour break, the route continues towards the Sopata area. About 45 minutes later, you’ll find yourself beneath Mount Kofinas, before heading west back to Kapetaniana.
