The exhibition "Politics and Society in the Cretan State (1898-1913)" opens to the public on February 17, 2025, with an official inauguration on Sunday, February 23, at 19:00 at the Basilica of Saint Mark – Heraklion Municipal Art Gallery.
Curated by the Foundation of the Hellenic Parliament for Parliamentarism and Democracy and the National Research Foundation "Eleftherios K. Venizelos", the exhibition has already been presented in Athens and Chania. In Heraklion, it is co-organized with the Municipality of Heraklion and the Historical Museum of Crete.
The exhibition explores the formation of the newly established Cretan State, intertwining major political and military events with the evolution of its institutions. It also highlights aspects of rural and urban life, developments in society, culture, and education. Through original documents and rare photographic reproductions, visitors will gain a vivid sense of Crete’s historical and social landscape at the turn of the 20th century.
The exhibits include archival materials and rare photographs from institutions such as the National Research Foundation "Eleftherios K. Venizelos", the Benaki Museum, the National Bank of Greece Cultural Foundation, the Alpha Bank Art Collection, the Historical Museum of Crete, the Heraklion Municipal Art Gallery, and the Library of the Hellenic Parliament.
