On Sunday, March 9, 2025, the Mountaineering Club of Agios Nikolaos is organizing a beautiful and easy circular hiking route in the Ano Merabello area. The hike is open to club members and those interested in joining.
We will start from Pano Loumas, following a dirt road and a trail to reach Moni Kardamoutsa, a jewel of Christian architecture. The monastery operated during the Venetian period and features an impressive ruined fortress-like complex in a Π-shape, dating back to the 15th-18th centuries.
Continuing along the trail, we will arrive at Moni Aretio, founded in the late 16th century, which houses icon paintings from the Cretan School of the 17th century.
We will then pass through the abandoned village of Chondrovolaki before reaching Skinia. From there, we will return to our starting point, passing by the recently restored windmills, renovated by an Austrian baron.
The route is easy, with both natural and cultural interest.
