Kardamoutsa Monastery
ABOUT
Kardamoutsa Monastery is Dedicated to the Holy Cross.
It was founded in the late 16th century and flourished in the 17th century. The Major Temple (chapel reserved for prayer and other services) dates back to 1580, is located in the centre of the monastery and is a simple vaulted single-aisled church. The rest of the buildings, restored after the monastery’s reconstitution, are situated around the Major Temple.
The various buildings, single-storey or two-storey, are of simple design, built with the dark limestone stone found in the area. Special care was given to the decoration of the Major Temple, which features relief roses in the windows and decorative panels in the shape of a cross on its eastern side.
