ABOUT

Garazo, situated across from it, stands in contrast to the majestic peak of Kouloukonas, which proudly reigns as the tallest summit in Mt Talea. Kouloukonas holds a significant place in Greek mythology, as it is believed to be the dwelling place of Talos, the son of Crete and grandfather of Rhadamanthys. Talos is described as a solar deity and is associated with various legends, including being a creation of Hephaestus or Daedalus. Talos is depicted as a bronze figure or a winged being with a single vein running from neck to ankle.

According to the myth, Talos was destined to be the guardian of the laws and the island. However, he was eventually captured by the Argonauts and met his demise at the hands of Dioscuri. Medea played a significant role in his downfall by finding and puncturing his one and only vein. Mt Talea, with its unparalleled beauty, serves as a formidable barrier, enveloping and safeguarding the region, providing protection to its inhabitants.

At the foothills of Mt Talea, the sound of gurgling waters provides nourishment to fertile valleys, supporting the livelihood of local farmers. Its slopes are adorned with boundless pastures, offering ample grazing land. And atop the mountain, one can find Timios Stavros (the Holy Cross), majestically positioned to face Psiloritis, creating a symbolic connection between these two magnificent peaks.
