Rosa Gorge
ABOUT
Rosa Gorge is located in the Municipality of Hersonissos, on the western slopes of the Dikti Mountains, beyond Avdou. The gorge has a unique character, and its distinctive beauty, according to geologists, comes from its walls, which were formed underwater at depths greater than 4,000 meters, around 150 million years ago. The impressive geological formations include large vertical rocks made of rust-colored iron oxides, composed of platy limestones with intense folds and distinctive reddish-brown hues due to phyllite, a rock related to slate. These oxides give the rocks of the gorge their pink color, likely the reason for its name.
The gorge is home to over 120 species of plants, mostly cliff-dwelling varieties, and serves as a refuge for a variety of birds.

The tip of Local!
The route is impressive, as the path at one point leaves the riverbed and winds its way up a steep, serpentine slope.
