Panagia Gouverniotissa Church of the Virgin Mary
ABOUT
The Church of Panagia Gouviotissa is housed in the main church of a monastery that now lies in ruins. The monastery was a fief belonging to Laurentius Maripero during the Venetian period, as recorded in the Ducal Archives of Chandax (1368).
Most of the icons that adorned the temple and which are now in the Historical Museum of Crete belong to that period.
The Church of Panagia Gouviotissa is a significant monument from the Palaiologian period in Crete and has been influenced by renowned manuscripts and Western iconography. The quality of the execution and strong narrative connect the monument to the Macedonian School. Even today, Gouviotissa remains a religious monument with its glory intact, and the area celebrates one of its largest festivals on 15th August.
Visitors are welcome to the temple, and they can also call 6972323300 for further information.
