Monastery of the Saviour and St Gideon
ABOUT
The Monastery of the Saviour and St Gideon, better known as Metochi Karakalou, is situated in the village of Margarites.
The monastery was constructed in the late 15th to early 16th century and has been affiliated with the Karakalou Monastery of Mt Athos since the 18th century.
The founder of the monastery belonged to the Venetian-Cretan family of Dandolo, who owned property in Margarites.
In front of the monastery's exquisite gate, there is a tomb adorned with the well-preserved coat of arms of the Dandolo family, which remains in excellent condition to this day.
The monastery appears to have originated as a convent.
Originally a convent, it was ceded to the Karakalou Monastery during the Ottoman rule and subsequently underwent a transformation into a monastery.
One of its monks was the revered martyr Gideon, hailing from Tyrnavos in Larissa, and he was martyred by the Turks in 1818.
