Malia Antiquities
ABOUT
The archaeological site of Malia is situated adjacent to the wetland of Potamos and in close proximity to the sea. This location once housed a significant Minoan city and boasted the third-largest Minoan palace, following Knossos and Phaistos.
The city's existence remained unknown until 1880 when the owner of the area stumbled upon some gold leaf a few metres west of the palace.
This event served as the catalyst for the excavation of the entire area by gold prospectors, leading to the name Chrysolakkos.
In 1915, Joseph Hatzidakis initiated excavations in the port, and in 1921, the French School of Archaeology resumed work in Chrysolakkos. It was at this site that the renowned gold jewel adorned with bees was discovered, considered the most significant find in Malia. This artefact is now displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion.
Close to the archaeological site, there is a beach and food shops for visitors to enjoy.
