Kato Viannos: Bridging Tympaki and Sitia
ABOUT
Kato Viannos is a small village where the average age of its residents is gradually increasing. It is situated on the southern slopes of Mt Dikti. According to Wikipedia, during the period of Turkish occupation, there existed the settlement of Pera Mesi, which includes the chapel of Panagia.
Tragically, a Turkish invasion during a wedding celebration resulted in the massacre of the revellers, following a suggestion from a young child. The settlement was also destroyed during this incident.
The name 'Mesi,' which translates to 'Middle' in English, probably originates from the fact that the village's founders came from both Tympaki and Sitia, meeting at this central location, now situated in the southern part of the Heraklion prefecture, between the two towns.
