Apakougi Cave
ABOUT
In the village of Sykologos, located within the Municipality of Viannos, beauty knows no bounds.
Apakougi, situated at an elevation of 400 metres, is home to a spacious cave and the remains of the ancient church of Agia Apakougi. According to tradition, the church was destroyed by the Arabs in 824, following their arrival in Psari Forada and subsequent occupation of Crete. Unfortunately, the church was never reconstructed after its destruction.
The cave itself remains unexplored officially, but according to local residents, it is believed to be expansive. There is a story passed down through tradition that a rooster once entered the cave but was unable to find its way out again. Additionally, there is a tradition stating that St Obedience extended her hand from the cave entrance and bestowed blessings upon the faithful by offering blessed bread.
