Antiskari: The Village of Galley Rowers
ABOUT
Antiskari is situated along the southern foothills of Asterousia, close to the tourist village of Lentas.
The area has access to groundwater, and the stretch of land from the village to Platia Peramata forms an uninterrupted expanse of early vegetable gardens.
According to Wikipedia, the remains of the ancient city of Lasaea (Lasaia), referenced by Apostle Paul in the Acts of the Apostles (27:8), can be found a brief distance to the west of the village.
Antiskari: The Village of Galley Rowers and its Name's Origins
During the Venetian occupation, a group of individuals worked as rowers in the galleys, taking the place of the local villagers who were required to perform this duty. The villagers compensated them, and these rowers were referred to as ‘antiskari’. The village is believed to have derived its name from them. Consequently, the village came to be known as the village of ‘antiskari’.
