Agios Nikolaos at Hersonissos Port

Nestled within the port of Hersonissos lies a precious jewel—a stunning chapel that exudes an undeniable charm!

This sacred single-aisled vaulted chapel of Agios Nikolaos, belonging to the parish of Koutouloufari, is a testament to the area's rich history.

According to the Municipality of Hersonissos, the church was constructed in the 17^th or 18^th century atop the ruins of a grand three-aisled early Christian basilica dating back to the 6^th century. The modest chapel of Agios Nikolaos was erected adjacent to the apse, within the central aisle of the basilica.

Today, the modern Church of Agios Nikolaos serves as a testament to timeless craftsmanship. Constructed of stone and featuring a wooden iconostasis adorned with contemporary icons—crafted in 2011—depicting Glykofilousa, Pantocrator, and Agios Nikolaos, it continues to inspire awe and reverence among visitors.
