Agios Nikolaos at Hersonissos Port
ABOUT
Nestled within the port of Hersonissos lies a precious jewel—a stunning chapel that exudes an undeniable charm!
This sacred single-aisled vaulted chapel of Agios Nikolaos, belonging to the parish of Koutouloufari, is a testament to the area's rich history.
According to the Municipality of Hersonissos, the church was constructed in the 17th or 18th century atop the ruins of a grand three-aisled early Christian basilica dating back to the 6th century. The modest chapel of Agios Nikolaos was erected adjacent to the apse, within the central aisle of the basilica.
Today, the modern Church of Agios Nikolaos serves as a testament to timeless craftsmanship. Constructed of stone and featuring a wooden iconostasis adorned with contemporary icons—crafted in 2011—depicting Glykofilousa, Pantocrator, and Agios Nikolaos, it continues to inspire awe and reverence among visitors.
