Here, time seems to freeze. Modern rhythms of daily life are abandoned, and tradition takes precedence!
Anogia plays a pivotal role in introducing visitors to the authentic essence of Crete!
With the Municipality of Anogia providing two crucial facilities—the thematic park 'Mitata, The Shepherd's Land', and The Centre of Archaeological Information—the N-Idaia Synergasia Social Cooperative carries out initiatives aimed at both the local community and visitors to Anogia.
Ms Evi Vrentzou, representing the N-Idaia Synergasia Social Cooperative, explains to Discovercrete that the emphasis is on livestock farming, the primary economic activity in the region. The goal was to establish a venue where various aspects of the daily lives of Anogia residents, which are slowly disappearing, are showcased.
In the past, the cheese-making cooperative of Anogia operated in the area, and visitors now have the opportunity to see both traditional and modern workshops.
Within the Thematic Park, visitors will find an exhibition and refreshment area constructed in the style of the Venetian dairy at the Archaeological Site of Zominthos. Additionally, the surrounding area features a threshing floor, an amphitheatre, a mitato dedicated to the Shepherd, a Cheese House or Klidospito, a mitato dedicated to Weaving and the by-products of livestock farming, and an accommodation mitato, which is not currently in use.
Students visit the park to learn about the cheese-making process and how to prepare delicious pies, including cheese pies. Additionally, individuals participating in Erasmus programmes are often seen on the premises, eager to explore and engage with the activities.
Ms Vrentzou highlights that visitors have the opportunity to experience firsthand the practices of livestock farming and the production of local products, such as honey.
There are plans underway to develop a programme for wool processing, which will offer visitors an immersive and hands-on experience.
At Mitata, the Shepherd's Place, various events are hosted with a backdrop of Psiloritis, including stargazing nights!
