In 1922, at Lions Square in Heraklion, a family business opened its doors, forever leaving its mark on the city. Its Armenian founder, a refugee who fled persecution with his family, decided to share his expertise in traditional dough-making from his homeland. Thus, he created a shop offering bougatsa made with his secret Armenian recipe, giving locals a taste of something unique and unforgettable.
The founder's family poured endless dedication into their work, weaving tradition with their new life in Heraklion. The shop, named "Kir Kor," soon became synonymous with the city, beloved by locals and visitors alike for its flavors and unmatched quality. Over time, Kir Kor has grown into a legacy, staying true to its roots under the guidance of the founder’s nephew and his daughters, who proudly uphold its original character. Every item remains handmade, preserving Kir Kor’s timeless essence.
Inside the shop, you’ll find a small collection of photographs showing Lions Square as it was in the 1960s, offering a nostalgic glimpse into the area's history. At Kir Kor, don’t miss the chance to try the famous bougatsa filled with cream and mizithra, a local delicacy. The menu also caters to modern tastes with new versions, like bougatsa with ham, cheese, and tomato, and a vegan option with wild greens. Also popular is their beloved "kourou" cheese pie, known for its delightful biscuit-like crust.
To ensure the finest quality, Kir Kor sources butter, milk, and mizithra from trusted local suppliers. Their production starts at dawn, with the first batch fresh out of the oven by 6:30 am, and continues throughout the day until late into the night.
This charming bougatsa shop is celebrated for its warm atmosphere and long-standing staff, who are truly part of the family. A visit to Kir Kor isn’t complete without a Greek coffee. And if you’re lucky, you might just catch the sound of street musicians serenading Lions Square!
