It will shed light on the urban history of the founding and development of the archaic cities of Crete (7th–5th century BCE)!

The Heraklion Archaeological Museum and the Ephorate of Antiquities of Heraklion are delighted to announce the inauguration of the archaeological exhibition titled “EKATOPOLIS. The World of Archaic Crete”, by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, on Thursday, December 12, 2024, at 18:00, in the Lecture Hall of the Heraklion Archaeological Museum.

“EKATOPOLIS” aims to illuminate the fascinating history of the founding and development of the archaic cities of Crete (7th–5th century BCE), which emerged as centers of culture and power approximately 500 years after the end of the Minoan civilization. It is a historical, social, and political phenomenon, as Crete developed early political structures and institutions that contributed to shaping the political identity of the ancient Greek world.

Through a selection of 300 objects, the exhibition attempts to reveal the character and identity of the archaic city and highlight a part of Crete’s heritage that, while significant, remains largely unknown to the general public.

  • Exhibition Duration: December 2024 – August 2025
  • Location: Temporary Exhibition Hall, Heraklion Archaeological Museum, Entrance from Doukos Bofor Street

Information about the exhibition and the events accompanying it will be announced periodically on the museum’s website and social media.
