Vrachasi: A Village with a Rich History
ABOUT
There are regions in Crete that, despite their proximity to tourist destinations, turn a deaf ear to the sirens and remain loyal to tradition.
Vrachasi stands as one of the oldest villages in the area, boasting a rich history reflected in its ancient mansions, fountains, and the Folklore Museum, renowned for its rare exhibits, aptly named The Vrachasi House.
Owing to its strategic location, Vrachasi frequently became the battleground for conflicts between Cretan revolutionaries and Ottoman forces during the 19th century. Notably, it is the birthplace of Konstantinos Sfakianakis, a key figure in the 1866 revolution, and Ioannis Sfakianakis, a physician and politician who led the initial Executive Committee of the Cretan State.
