The Archaeological Site of Apodoulou
ABOUT
About a kilometer northwest of the village of Apodoulou, on the slope of a hill, lies the impressive archaeological site of an important Minoan settlement dating back to the Protopalatial period (1900–1600 BC). Set in a strategic mountain location with sweeping views all the way to the Libyan Sea, this settlement was well-positioned on a route linking the grand palace of Phaistos with the significant Minoan center at Monastiraki, likely serving as a key stopover between these major centers.
Excavations here have unearthed six distinct building complexes that reflect the site’s role as a bustling node in Minoan trade and communication networks. Numerous artifacts underscore Apodoulou's close ties with the prominent Minoan palaces, hinting at a vibrant exchange of goods and ideas.
This settlement met a sudden end around 1700 BC, destroyed by an earthquake and fire that ravaged many Minoan centers, including the palaces at Phaistos and Knossos. Today, the site at Apodoulou offers visitors a glimpse into the rich, interconnected world of ancient Minoan Crete.
