Pompia: A Village of Active Clubs!
ABOUT
Pompia is a picturesque semi-mountainous village nestled in the Messara plain, situated at the base of Mt Vigla in the Asterousia mountain range, with an elevation of 150 metres.
The village celebrates its patron saint, Agios Georgios the Reveller, with festive gatherings on 3rd November.
The village of Pompia and the nearby settlement of Stavies derive their names from the Roman cities of Pompeii and Stavia, which were famously destroyed by the eruption of Mt Vesuvius in 79 AD in southern Italy. Notably, Pompia was the birthplace of Michalis Korakas, a chieftain who played a role in the revolution against the Turks. During the Turkish occupation, the Gymnasium of Pompia was established, which remains one of the two in the Heraklion region and is still operational today.
