Monastery of St George (Agios Georgios) Selinari
ABOUT
Since the early 20th century, the church of Agios Georgios in Selinari has been a significant pilgrimage destination in the broader region, particularly revered as a guardian of travellers in Eastern Crete.
In the past, ascetics lived on the steep slopes surrounding the monastery. The old church of the monastery, which served as the main temple for religious services, dates back to the 16th century.
Following the construction of the motorway in 1925, the Church of Agios Georgios became a popular pilgrimage site for drivers passing through the area.
The contemporary monastery was established in 1961.
