Meronas: Overlooking Mt Psiloritis
ABOUT
At an altitude of 620 meters, with sweeping views of Mount Psiloritis and the Amari Valley, lies Meronas—a beautiful village that preserves much of its traditional architecture. Here, you’ll find small shops, cozy cafés, traditional tavernas, and a range of accommodations for a comfortable stay.
In the heart of the village, don’t miss the Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, a remarkable 14th-century, three-aisled, vaulted basilica. Another historic treasure is the two-aisled Church of Panagia Mavridiani, built in the 13th century and dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. Located in the "Sochora" area, this church features remnants of frescoes that still survive today.
Meronas is especially popular with fans of traditional Cretan music, thanks to the Music School held here every August. The village also celebrates its annual festival on July 25, honoring Saint Panteleimon.
