Kitroplatia Square in Agios Nikolaos
ABOUT
Kitroplatia Square is situated 200 metres west of Lake Voulismeni in Agios Nikolaos and occupies a central position in the heart of the city.
Adjacent to the sea is the cobblestone square, surrounded by numerous ouzo bars and cafés.
The beach is adorned with tamarisk trees and features sandy shores with pebbles. Adjacent to it, a stone-built coastal pedestrian street begins, guiding the way to the square.
Kitroplatia Square derives its name from the thriving citrus trade that characterised the area until the 20th century, specifically in the citron market.
The cultivation of citrus fruits, once associated with the mythical symbolism of apples representing fertility and abundance, has significantly declined in Crete.
Kitroplatia hosts musical events, theatrical performances, dance theatre events, festivals, and celebrations.
