Keritis

ABOUT

The Keritis River is not just one of the most beautiful rivers in Chania, but also a place of deep historical significance. At the famous Keritis Bridge, 108 men were executed during the German occupation, marking it as a solemn site of remembrance.

The river, also referred to as the Keritis stream, originates in the village of Meskla, flows through the fertile Alikianos valley, and empties into the beach at Platanias. Before reaching the sea, the river is renamed Platanias, after the plane trees that line its banks. In ancient times, it was known as Iardanos.

It’s a place where nature and history intertwine, creating a peaceful yet poignant atmosphere.
