Bust of Captain Kazanis in Marmaketo

In 1973, Emmanuel Rovidis (Captain Kazanis), a prominent chieftain of the area, was born in Marmaketo within the Lassithi Plateau Municipality. 

He participated in numerous battles against the Turks and played a significant role in the struggle of the Lassithians. 

A statue has been erected in the central square of the village in his honour, where a wreath is laid on every national holiday.
