Ancient Zominthos: Unveiling the Majestic Minoan Palace

ABOUT

Zominthos, an ancient Minoan city, was situated in the Ida Mountain range on Mt Psiloritis in the heart of Crete. It was located on the Zominthos Plateau, standing at an altitude of 1,187 metres. The Minoan city is positioned about 7.5 kilometres west of Anogia, along the road leading to the Nida Plateau.

Excavations at Zominthos commenced in the 1980s under the direction of Yiannis Sakellarakis. After a hiatus, the excavations resumed in 2004 under his leadership until 2010, when he sadly passed away. Since 2011, the responsibility for the excavations has been taken up by Efi Sapouna-Sakellaraki, his wife. According to her, the prosperity of Psiloritis, the mountain where Zominthos is located, played a significant role in the economy of Knossos.

The construction and frescoes found at the site provide evidence that the descendants of the Knossos dynasty, who held authority over the region, resided there.
