Before you pay them a visit, ensure you have a quality camera in tow. Besides the allure of the churches themselves, you'll be eager to capture the stunning landscape they inhabit: nestled beside the sandy shores, amidst tamarisk trees!
Light a candle, and relish the sunset! Hersonissos Municipality boasts numerous picturesque churches, including:
Agios Konstantinos and Agia Eleni, in Gouves
Built in 1910 with stones that, according to local lore, “came down from the mountain with the rain,” this seaside church is all about charm. Its stone-built structure and postcard-perfect location have made it a beloved spot for weddings and baptisms. Come for the view, stay for the atmosphere.
Agios Nikolaos, Hersonissos Port
Right by the harbour, this single-aisled, barrel-vaulted chapel belongs to the parish of Koutouloufari. It dates back to the 16th century, but the real treasures are inside: wall paintings from the 14th century that have stood the test of time and sea breeze.
Agia Marina, in Analipsi
A newer addition to the coastal church landscape, Agia Marina was inaugurated in 2022 and sits right by the sea in the village of Analipsi. It’s part of the Parish of the Ascension of the Saviour under the Metropolis of Petra and Hersonissos. Every year on July 16 and 17, locals gather here to honour Agia Marina with lively celebrations and traditional feasts.
