The magic of Christmas comes alive in Rethymno as the city’s holiday season officially kicks off on Sunday, December 1, 2024.
The highlight of the evening will be the lighting of the city’s Christmas tree at the Unknown Soldier Square, accompanied by the grand illumination of Rethymno’s festive decorations. This symbolic start to the season will be led by the mayor, Mr. Giorgis H. Marinakis, who will deliver a holiday message before lighting the tree.
The celebration begins at 7 PM with the Rethymno Municipal Philharmonic Orchestra welcoming locals and visitors alike to the square with cheerful Christmas melodies.
Adding a playful twist, the dance-theater group Team Fourteen will bring the Oompa Loompas straight from Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory to spread holiday cheer and help the mayor with the tree lighting ceremony.
When the tree lights up, the sky will sparkle with silent fireworks, a thoughtful addition to this year’s festivities to avoid startling animals.
Next, a whimsical circus show featuring the “Kalikanzarina” (a cheeky Christmas goblin) and her elf companion will transport the audience to the magical world of the North Pole.
To wrap up the evening, the Make Musik Memories Xmas Collective will perform a Christmas concert filled with jazzy, swing, and Latin beats—guaranteed to get everyone in the holiday spirit.
A Month of Christmas Cheer
This event marks the start of a packed program of festive activities organized by the Municipality of Rethymno in collaboration with the Rethymno Commercial Association. Events will continue until December 31, 2024, ensuring the city stays brimming with Christmas joy throughout the season.
