If you spot flags fluttering atop the hill overlooking the village of Potamies, in the Municipality of Hersonissos, it signals the reopening of the monastery complex of Panagia Gouverniotissa, welcoming pilgrims and visitors once more.

Nestled amidst lush greenery, Panagia Gouverniotissa is a breath-taking sanctuary, enveloped in the fragrance of indigenous aromatic plants such as sage, oregano, and more, creating a sensory experience like no other.

A monument steeped in history, Panagia Gouverniotissa is experiencing a revival, all thanks to the dedication of a group of volunteers who established the Cultural and Development Organisation of Potamies 'Panagia Gouverniotissa' with the sole purpose of revitalising this cherished site.

In addition to the refurbished Church of Panagia Gouverniotissa, adorned with remarkable 14th-century frescoes, visitors can marvel at the following:

- The Exhibition of Ecclesiastical Treasures presents the wooden iconostasis of Gouverniotissa, sacred gospels, the Monastery's Code, handmade liturgical vestments, and church utensils (holy chalices, spears, crosses). Additionally, an adjacent hall features copies of the monastery's portable icons from the 16th century.

- Special showcases unveil a part of the monastery's rich history, showcasing its role in the Cretan Revolution (displaying weaponry from that era), its contribution to the establishment of schools, and documents confirming financial support sent to the local government of Heraklion.

- The Folklore Corner offers a substantial glimpse into our cherished tradition. The antique exhibits transport you back in time, offering insight into the way of life in a Cretan home, including the art of weaving on a traditional loom.

- The space hosting periodic exhibitions.

- The Botanical Garden.

- The perennial olive tree, a natural monument estimated to be over 500 years old.

- The breath-taking view overlooking Lagada.

- Enjoying a coffee or refreshment at the snack bar within the premises.
