2 Days of Swimming at Elafonissi and Balos

Get ready for a magical two-day adventure at two of Crete's most stunning destinations: Elafonissi and Balos.

Elafonissi and Balos are two of the most popular destinations, not only in the Chania region but in all of Crete. If you’re planning to visit in July or August, be prepared for large crowds, as these months see a huge influx of tourists.

A good starting point for your adventure is the beautiful seaside town of Kissamos. With its charming atmosphere and port, Kissamos is a gateway to many sea excursions, including trips to both Balos and Gramvousa, making it an ideal base for exploring this part of Crete.

Day 1: A Beach Day at Elafonissi

Your first day kicks off with a swim at Elafonissi Beach. This is one of the most famous and organized beaches on the island, and it attracts a lot of visitors, so make sure to bring your own umbrella—every last shady spot under the tamarisk trees gets taken fast!

Next, you'll head to the village of Kaliviani. This charming settlement, with its traditional character, draws many visitors due to its proximity to Balos, one of Crete's top summer destinations. Picturesque cobblestone streets, a well-kept square, and warm, welcoming locals promise a stay full of authentic Cretan charm.

Make a stop for traditional food and a great atmosphere at Grambousa Tavern. Be sure to book in advance, as it's very popular, and finding a table last-minute can be tricky! You'll choose your meal from a newspaper-style menu, and your table setting arrives in a traditional Cretan pouch. Don't miss the chance to try the Chaniotiko boureki made with vegetables from the tavern's garden, and the Chaniotiki kreatotourta.

Day 2 begins at the port of Kissamos, where you can catch a boat for a day trip to Balos and Gramvousa. The excursion starts in the morning and finishes in the early afternoon.

Make sure to bring plenty of water and an umbrella, as the beaches are not organized.

Your first stop is Balos!

After an hour-long boat ride, you’ll arrive at Balos. A short 5-minute walk over sand and rocks will take you to the main beach for swimming. You'll be amazed by the lagoon, where one part is shallow enough to walk through, while the other is deeper, perfect for a refreshing swim in crystal-clear turquoise waters, with fine sand and scattered seashells.

Your second stop is the dreamy Gramvousa!

The boat will pick you up from Balos and take you to Gramvousa. Here, you'll need to choose how to spend your remaining time—either relaxing on the stunning beach or hiking up to the Gramvousa Fortress. There are only a few tamarisk trees offering shade. Keep in mind, there’s not enough time to do both.

Your day wraps up with a return to the port of Kissamos!
