The Archaeological Marvel of Mochlos

The archaeological site of Mochlos encompasses the Minoan settlement situated in the southern part of the islet of Agios Nikolaos and the beach on the opposing coast. It includes the Early Minoan cemetery on the west side of the island, the Late Minoan cemetery positioned atop a hill behind the contemporary settlement, the ancient quarry at Vagia, and the Roman fish tanks along the coast opposite the island.

According to the Ministry of Culture, collaborative excavations conducted by the American School of Archaeology and the Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities on the island of Mochlos have unveiled ten distinct phases of the Bronze Age, ranging from the Early Minoan to the Late Minoan III or Mycenaean period. In the broader vicinity of Mochlos, numerous archaeological sites dating from the Minoan to the Byzantine period have also been identified.
