Kale Fortress in Ierapetra

It stands tall, welcoming its visitors. The fortress of Kale in Ierapetra is situated at the entrance to the port of the city.
It is the only surviving city fortress on the southern coast of Crete. It dates back to the early Venetian rule (13 – 15th century) and belongs to the type of rectangular fortifications.
During the Turkish occupation, the fortress underwent extensive repairs during which both its exterior and interior were altered. The site is open to the public.
