Gerakari Square
ABOUT
Gerakari stands as one of the most sizable villages within the Amari municipality.
The village of Gerakari has been constructed at an elevation of 680 metres, and it goes by various name variations.
Its nomenclature is believed to derive either from a Byzantine feudal lord, the falcon breeding practice known as ‘ierakarios’, or the term ‘Iera Kara’, associated with the relics of a local saint.
Archaeological findings dating back to both the Minoan and Roman periods have been excavated in the surrounding area. Additionally, in 1461, during the Venetian occupation, Gerakari played a pivotal role as a hub for revolutionary activities.
In the recently refurbished square, various events unfold, including festivals, local celebrations, musical and dance performances, bazaars, speeches, and exhibitions showcasing local products.
