Church of the Holy Spirit in Limnakaro

ABOUT

The two-aisled church dedicated to the Transfiguration and the Holy Spirit, located in the Limnakaro Plateau, is of particular interest.

According to OrthodoxCrete, this church is the only one in the Lassithi Plateau with frescoes from the Venetian period, a fact that contradicts historical accounts of the forced depopulation of the plateau between 1293 and 1463.

Originally built with a cross-vaulted design, the church underwent several modifications over the centuries that altered its appearance. The most significant change occurred in 1875 with the addition of the northern aisle, dedicated to the Holy Spirit. In the late 20th century, extensive restoration work was undertaken, restoring the original form of the southern aisle. During this restoration, a fragmentary fresco decoration, likely dating to the first half of the 14th century, was uncovered and preserved. In addition to the usual gospel scenes, a noteworthy depiction of the church's founders holding a model of the church can be seen.
