Apodoulou: The Village with a Minoan Essence
ABOUT
Apodoulou has been designated as a traditional settlement.
‘Apodoulos’ refers to a freedman, someone who was once enslaved but has gained their freedom.
The village is home to the Church of Agios Ioannis Prodromos, erected in 1894 on the grounds of its predecessor. Additionally, there is Agios Georgios Xififoros, a Byzantine church dating back to the 13th century adorned with numerous frescoes. Another noteworthy site is Agios Georgios Methystis, situated at the location of ‘Terzi to Lako’, believed to have been constructed during the Venetian occupation. Lastly, the church of Agios Nikolaos, initially demolished in 1969, was later reconstructed on the same site. In proximity to the settlement, archaeologists have excavated one of the most significant Minoan settlements in central Crete.
The village features a café and a taverna.
Towards the end of summer, the cultural association hosts a Wine Festival.
