Agia Irini Convent: Perched on a Rock, Resembling a Fortress
ABOUT
Agia Irini Monastery in Rethymno was likely established by ascetics who inhabited the caves of the surrounding area, making it one of the oldest monasteries in Crete.
The current convent, formerly a monastery, is perched on a rock, providing breath-taking views and giving the impression of a fortified fortress.
The monastery operated during the Turkish occupation until the 1821 Revolution, but it experienced significant loss of property. Subsequently, its decline commenced, with only two monks remaining. A prolonged period of desolation ensued, during which it was at risk of deteriorating into a pile of ruins.
Initiated by Metropolitan Theodoros, three nuns established themselves near the settlement of Agia Irini and commenced the restoration of the site in 1989, respecting its space and architecture. Following its revitalisation, it now operates as a convent, housing eight nuns.
