First Stop: Chromonastiri

Just 12 kilometers from Rethymno, this village is a treasure trove of history and Venetian architecture.

The highlight of Chromonastiri is the Military Museum, housed in a striking Venetian mansion dating back to the early 17th century.

The museum showcases fascinating exhibits from Crete’s long military history, all within the walls of this beautifully preserved estate.

From here, a quick 10-minute drive takes you to the Monastery of Agia Irini, nestled in the quiet hamlet of the same name.

The monastery not only welcomes you with an air of serenity but also serves as a stronghold of traditional Cretan crafts. Here, the nuns have dedicated themselves to preserving local handicrafts, specializing in traditional weaving and embroidery, which you can admire in a small exhibit on-site.

End the Day in Rethymno

Rethymno makes for a perfect end to your day, with its Venetian harbor a lively focal point for both locals and visitors.

If you’re craving seafood, follow the aroma to Zefyros Fish Taverna, where you can treat yourself to fresh lobster or other seafood delicacies.

We suggest pairing the view with a glass of ouzo for the complete experience.
