Skotino Cave or Minos' Labyrinth
ABOUT
It is one of the most important caves in Crete, both from a speleological and an archaeological perspective. Excavation findings confirm the cave's use as a place of worship from at least 1900 B.C. until the 4th century A.D.
As you approach the entrance, you’ll be struck by the amphitheatrical arrangement of rocks in shades of orange, red, blue, and black. The entrance to the cave is relatively easy to access, with steps leading into the mouth of a large, lush doline.
Inside, you’ll find a massive and majestic chamber known as the "Great Temple," where impressive formations of stalagmites and stalactites abound. The next chamber, called the "Altar," is smaller in size (24x8.5x25 meters) and shows signs that sacrifices were once performed there. There is also a crevice in the floor where worshippers would offer gifts to the deity, such as oil, blood, and milk.
