Rethymno Lighthouse
ABOUT
The 9-metre-high lighthouse in the Venetian port of Rethymno is the second-largest Egyptian lighthouse in Crete, following the lighthouse of Chania.
Situated at the edge of the old breakwater of Rethymno, the lighthouse's construction has sparked various scenarios about its origins. However, recent research indicates that it was built in 1838 during the Egyptian occupation under Mehmet Ali.
The construction of the lighthouse was integrated into the port works carried out during the Egyptian occupation, and there is a possibility that a Venetian lighthouse occupied the same spot in the past.
In 1864, it came under the ownership of the French Company of Lighthouses.
