Platanos in Krasi

ABOUT

The square, adorned with the timeless plane tree, is situated in Krasi, a mountainous and traditional village within the municipality of Hersonissos.

The Old Plane Tree in the square is regarded as the oldest and most majestic plane tree in Crete and one of the largest in Greece. With a trunk circumference of about 24 metres, it is estimated to be 2,400 years old. Its massive stature is characterised by enormous branches and dense foliage that blankets the entire village square.

Adjacent to the plane tree, there are two springs or fountains that flow with gurgling water throughout the year, nourishing the roots of this colossal tree.

Indeed, Nikos Kazantzakis spent several summers with his friends in Krasi, the birthplace of his wife, Galatea Alexiou, between 1910 and 1920.

Surrounding the square are tavernas and cafés, and during the summer, the square becomes a venue for social and cultural events.
