Minoan Kydonia: Uncovering an Archaeological Site
ABOUT
The contemporary city of Chania has been established on the location of a significant ancient Cretan city known as Kydonia or ‘ku-do-ni-ja’ in the tablets of the Linear B script. According to tradition, it was one of the three cities founded by King Minos in Crete.
Since 1966 and continuing to the present day, rescue and systematic excavations have been conducted by the Central Committee of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities. A substantial portion of the city is being excavated in partnership with the Swedish Archaeological Institute. Some of the most noteworthy discoveries from these excavations are displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Chania.
