Rimondi Fountain: The Refreshing Attraction in the City Centre
ABOUT
The Rimondi Fountain is situated in the Old Town of Rethymno, specifically in Titos Petychakis Square, the former centre of the Venetian city.
The Rimondi Fountain stands as one of the most beautiful Venetian monuments in the city, commissioned by the Venetian governors to address the pressing water supply issues in Rethymno. Demonstrating their concern for the welfare of citizens, the Venetians constructed aqueducts and fountains. In 1626, the Rimondi Fountain was erected, named after the governor of the city at that time, Alvise Rimondi. This fountain played a crucial role in meeting the irrigation needs of the area.
The fountain is characterised by four graceful ribbed columns, culminating in intricate capitals that uphold an architrave featuring a Latin inscription. Water from the fountain flows through three lion heads. Positioned between the two central columns is the Rimondi emblem.
This stands as an impressive attraction, not only for Rethymno but also for the entirety of Crete.
