ABOUT

The Kazarma Fortress in Sitia stands prominently above the city and is visible from the beach. Constructed in the 13th century by the Venetians, it served as the garrison's barracks and was named Casa di Arma. Initially, it functioned as the primary defensive castle of the city, but it endured substantial damage due to frequent raids by pirates and conquerors.

The fortress served civil aviation purposes until 1966, when the initial efforts for a thorough and comprehensive restoration began. It was subsequently declared a listed historical monument.

Throughout the summer months, cultural events, concerts, and theatrical performances are held within the fortress as part of the Kornaria Festival, dedicated to the renowned poet of Sitia, Vitsentzos Kornaros.
