Exploring the Chinese Landscape in Kalamafka

ABOUT

Kalamafka is renowned for its natural springs.

The Ierapetra Municipality describes how the barren rock formations, adorned with bonsai pines sprouting unexpectedly, the plentiful water sources, including springs and the Kalamafka River that meanders through the village, not to mention the awe-inspiring Havgas Gorge, have earned Kalamafka the nickname of the 'Chinese Landscape.' This is just one of the many sources of pride for the villagers.

Kalamafka is situated at an elevation of 500 metres and boasts a population of roughly the same number of permanent residents. The local community is predominantly involved in agricultural activities, and the village is renowned for its numerous tavernas serving delectable local cuisine.

There is a belief that the ancient city of Larissa once thrived in this area during the Minoan period. However, its precise location continues to pose a challenge for researchers to this day.
