Adventure & Action
Once upon a time, a giant's beard was so long it split a mountain in two... That’s how one local legend begins — and it’s just the beginning of what you’ll find hidden in the wild gorges of Lassithi. Ancient myths, real stories from Minoan times, dramatic cliffs and sun-scorched paths are waiting to be explored.
If you’ve got adventure in your blood, lace up your boots and head for one of these nine unforgettable gorges:
Zakros Gorge (The Gorge of the Dead)
Starting from the village of Zakros and ending at Kato Zakros, this dramatic gorge was once the final resting place for Minoans who buried their dead in its caves. Today it’s a peaceful hike with awe-inspiring views.
Pervolakia Gorge
Close to the village of Pervolakia, this path takes you through sculpted rock walls and dry riverbeds in a raw and beautiful corner of eastern Crete.
Pefki Gorge
Beginning at the village of Pefki and ending near Asprolimni, this trail is perfect for a leisurely hike through lush vegetation and gentle rock formations.
Sarakina Gorge
Located near the village of Mythoi, this gorge is narrow, dramatic, and full of rock pools. Locals say it was sliced open by the beard of a giant — and you might just believe it when you see it.
Milonas Gorge
This one leads from the community of Agios Ioannis Ierapetras down toward the beach of Kakia Skala, between Koutsounari and Ferma. To reach its waterfall, you can choose between two different trails.
Agriomandra Gorge
This is the path you want to take if your final destination is the stunning beach of Agriomandra — a reward well worth the hike.
Oreino Gorge (The Gorge of the Red Butterflies)
A more technical gorge that requires special gear — and a sense of daring. Known for its seasonal waterfalls and wild nature, it’s a challenge for experienced trekkers.
Chochlakies Gorge
Starting from the charming village of Chochlakies in Sitia, this trail winds its way down to the unspoiled beach of Karoumes. A secluded paradise after a scenic hike.
Messa Gorge (Mesonas)
Set on the northern slopes of the Thrypti mountains near Kavousi, this gorge connects the Thrypti plateau with the valley of Kavousi. It’s wild, steep, and breathtaking.
Each of these gorges hides its own legends and secrets. Some will reward you with waterfalls or secret beaches. Others will challenge your legs and fuel your imagination. But all of them invite you to explore a deeper, wilder side of Crete — where history and landscape are carved into the same ancient rock.
