In the early hours of Wednesday, August 7th, 2024, a series of seismic tremors were recorded in Crete. According to the Geodynamic Institute of the Athens Observatory, the strongest quake occurred at 11:23 AM, with a magnitude of 4.8 on the Richter scale. Its epicenter was located in the sea, south of Heraklion, specifically 13 kilometers east-southeast of Kali Limenes, at a shallow depth of 2 kilometers.

Just two minutes earlier, a 4.1-magnitude quake had struck nearly the same area, 19 kilometers south-southeast of Kali Limenes. Earlier, at 11:11 AM, another tremor was recorded near Chania, 7 kilometers west of Falasarna.

The fourth and final tremor occurred at 11:47 AM, measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale, again south-southeast of Kali Limenes, 22 kilometers from the coast.

The tremors were felt in several areas around Heraklion, but no damage was reported. Authorities and experts assure that there is no reason for concern. They emphasize that the quakes were centered offshore and were of relatively low magnitude.
