Upon entering the historic centre of Rethymno through the Great Gate, you will be captivated by the narrow alleys and squares that appear untouched by time. Your journey will lead you to the Rimondi Fountain, adorned with ornate lion heads and the Venetian coat of arms. As you explore further, you'll encounter minarets and other Turkish additions to the Venetian buildings. Don't miss the chance to visit the Church of St Francis, which now houses the Archaeological Museum of Rethymno.

The charming alleys adorned with flowers and bustling shops exude vibrancy and life. Tavernas along these streets offer a taste of traditional Cretan cuisine, ensuring an evening filled with enjoyment until the early morning hours. To unwind, a drink at the Venetian harbour promises relaxation amidst a delightful view and the soothing sounds of the sea.

In 1967, the Old Town was designated a Historical Listed Monument, and in 1985, it received the classification of a Traditional Settlement.
