Toplou Monastery Winery: Crafting Exceptional Quality Wines

ABOUT

The Holy Monastery of Panagia Akrotiriani and Agios Ioannis Theologos Toplou of Sitia was constructed in the 14th century and has continuously played a significant role in the social and viticultural history of the region ever since.

The monastery has consistently produced wine for the church's requirements, for friends, as well as for various social and religious occasions. The harsh and arid landscapes surrounding the monastery are perfectly suited for cultivating vineyards. The approach to vineyard cultivation has always been closely linked to environmental conservation and the goal of creating pure, wholesome products.

The monastery's wines already enjoy a substantial following, but within the monastery, there are continuous endeavours to enhance their quality. Through restrictions on production volume and the refinement of winemaking methods, we consistently create more sophisticated wines that meet the discerning tastes of even the most demanding connoisseurs.

It is a contemporary winery situated in the Lasithi region, boasting extensive expertise in viticulture and winemaking. Positioned just a 10-minute drive to the west of the city of Sitia, it is also conveniently located a mere 10-minute drive to the south of the ancient cities of Itanos or Ermoupoli and the picturesque palm forest of Vai.

At our facilities, we offer the following amenities and services:

Visitors to our facilities can enjoy a guided tour in both Greek and English, covering the vineyards, the museum, the winemaking area, concluding at the tasting room. The tasting room is distinguished by its use of stone and wood, seamlessly blending with the surrounding natural beauty of the area. Wine tastings are conducted here, accompanied by traditional meze such as gruyere cheese and rusks.

Additionally, we practice integrated, organic vineyard cultivation to produce wines made from organic grapes, emphasising the distinctive characteristics of each grape variety. These grapes, coupled with the unique climatic conditions, result in wines that offer a delightful experience with one-of-a-kind aromas and flavours. Consequently, we provide outstanding quality products including wine, strovili (a traditional Cretan drink), tsikoudia (a type of brandy), and olive oil. Furthermore, we offer the convenience of credit card payment options.

Visitors also have the opportunity to explore nearby attractions and embark on a journey to visit the Holy Monastery of Toplou. There, you can encounter icons and artwork that exemplify the development of Byzantine iconography, possessing significant artistic value throughout history. The monastery houses a museum featuring rare exhibits, as well as a library filled with historical and ecclesiastical books, providing a rich cultural and historical experience.
