Omalos: A Remarkable Village in Crete

Omalos is a great choice for an overnight stay if you plan to start your day early and hike down the Samaria Gorge, away from the tourist crowds.

Omalos offers a limited number of guest rooms and traditional tavernas. It's a very small village, so you shouldn't expect an abundance of amenities. Nonetheless, this provides a rare opportunity to immerse yourself in the authentic Cretan countryside.

Regarding accessibility, in the latter part of the journey from Chania to Omalos, particularly after passing through Fourni and especially after Lakki, the road becomes narrow and includes some tight curves.

Given that the road is also utilised by local buses that transport visitors to and from the Samaria Gorge, it's advisable to exercise caution while driving.

Furthermore, during the winter season, it's important to be even more cautious, as there is a possibility of encountering stones on the mountain road.
