Maroulas: The Village of Towers
ABOUT
Situated approximately 10 kilometres from the city of Rethymno, Maroulas graces the hilltop with its Venetian doors, making it one of the most exquisite and distinctive villages in Crete.
Legend has it that the village derived its name from the shepherdess Marouli, who discovered a cool-water spring while tending to her flock in the area. This spring, dating back to the Venetian occupation, remains a significant feature of the village.
The enchanting ambiance of pedestrian streets, narrow lanes, Venetian doors, and ancient towers defines Maroulas' unique identity. Notably, the Church of Prophet Elias atop the hill serves as one of the village's most important landmarks.
To honour Prophet Elias, a festival is held annually on 20th July, adding a vibrant cultural touch to this picturesque village.
