Kallergi Refuge: Enjoy a Breath-taking View of the Samaria Gorge

ABOUT

Perched above the Omalos Plateau on the western side of the Lefka Ori (White Mountains) at an altitude of 1,650 metres, the Kallergi Refuge offers a unique vantage point to marvel at the breath-taking views of the Samaria Gorge, as well as the impressive peaks of Gigilos, Volakia, Melidaou, and Pachnes. With accommodation for up to 45 people, it serves as a comfortable and awe-inspiring base for explorers.

Constructed in 1970, the Kallergi Refuge stands as a testament to its rich history. Open daily from April to October, it provides essential amenities, including a well-equipped kitchen. In collaboration with the Austrian Alpinist School of Innsbruck, hikers have the opportunity to spend the night here before embarking on their journey into the heart of the majestic Lefka Ori.

The trail leading to the Kallergi Refuge begins at Xyloskalo, located at the entrance of the Samaria Gorge. From there, it ascends towards the northeast. After approximately 20 minutes, the trail intersects with an uphill dirt road. Following this road for about 45 minutes, hikers arrive at the refuge, where they can enjoy the unparalleled views of the surrounding peaks and the vast plateau.
